Since the emergence of Napster a long struggle between record companies and download sites to establish a system of royalty payments that could trickle down to the people who actually write and perform the music that’s being sold. People still buy CDs, but it’s become even harder for new talent, or established talent for that matter, to reach the shelves of the record stores. Independent artists have to employ the MP3 streaming and download route in the hope that anyone will hear them.
